High Pressure fogging systems for industrial cooling

An air cooled condenser’s performance is largely depending on ambient conditions. During high ambient temperatures in the summer period, a fogging system can be very effective in order to maximize the ACC’s performance in these ambient conditions. By injecting water droplets into the ACC’s air stream a significant improvement of performance can be realized.


How does it work?


Today, the abient temperature is 35°C with a relative humidity of 50%.

In this case the relative humidity is increased to 80% by adding water droplets (mist) into the air stream of the condenser. Due to the energy needed for evaporation of the water droplets, the air will cool down by 5°C. (Adiabatic cooling). To achieve this 2,5 grams of water needs to be added to each m3 of air passing through the air cooled condenser.

In order to avoid contamination of the heat exchangers by water and to prevent damage to the motors and drives it is necessary to make the evaporation very fast. To ensure a fast evaporation, fog with droplet sizes of average 10 microns has to be produced. The mist will be delivered into the air stream by nozzles fed by a high pressure pump skid.

The nozzles are made with a check valve and an atomizing pin.
​The opening of the nozzle is only 0.2 mm.
​​When using a pressure of 70 to 105 bars, water will be atomized.

This is an example where a train station is cooled down by fogging.

This application is a process air cooler. Here the nozzles are located in the air inlet of the cooler before the air enters the fan. This is less effective as the fog can be diverted by the wind.

With ACC’s the nozzles are located between the fan and the bundles, which guarantees that all the water is sprayed in the cooling air needed.

The fogging system can also be used to cool down the environment like a terrace. The atmosphere becomes very pleasant due to the cooling.

During commissioning of the fogging system the ACC team will execute performance testing on the ACC to indicate the result of the improvements.

If the water quality requires softening, ACC Team could supply a water softener using resin to clean the water. The unit consists of two resin drums of which one is recuperating while the other is in operation.
